\"mss3\"<\/a>Twenty-one middle and junior military and police officers from the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), on Friday concluded a course on gender and human rights protection.<\/p>\n

The two-day refresher course targeted officers drawn from all contingents of the Mission and aimed at equipping them with new knowledge on international human rights law, gender, child protection, sexual exploitation and abuse.<\/p>\n

Officially closing the workshop, the Deputy Special Representative of the AU Commission Chairperson (DSRCC), for Somalia, Hon Lydia Wanyoto, emphasized the importance of such courses, which she said were an integral part of the Mission\u2019s work.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese trainings are the tools and skills we build, and we don\u2019t start in the mission area. We begin with pre-deployment training of the troops, before they come to Somalia,\u201d Hon. Wanyoto explained.
\n\u201cWe go the Troop Contributing Countries; we train them and vet them. When they get here, we continue training them so that they are able to monitor and report periodically, to enable us maintain the standards of operations of an international Mission like ours,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

Such in-Mission courses are held to improve reporting mechanisms in respect to the Human Rights due Diligence Policy.<\/p>\n

The workshop emphasised the importance of adhering to the Mission\u2019s Code of Conduct and the role played by the Civilian Casualty Tracking Analysis and Response Cell (CCTARC). The CCTARC aims to protect the Somali population by applying preventative measures to reduce incidents of civilian casualties.<\/p>\n

Mr. Musa Gbow, the AMISOM Child Protection Advisor, said the course enhanced the knowledge of the officers in aspects that are central to the attainment of the Mission\u2019s mandate.
\n\u201cIt has broadened their horizon and will enable them to look at some issues critically,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n
