The biggest Mother and Child hospital in East and Central Africa to open doors in Somalia
The biggest Mother and Child facility in East and Central Africa is coming up in the Somali capital Mogadishu in the coming months.
According to pictures released by a Turkish humanitarian orgernisation, the facility is set to have different sections. A pediatric and maternity section will be constructed to house the overwhelming number of service-seekers in a country that leads with child mortality rates.
The hospital was built at a place that was a dump site four years ago in Hamar Jajab neighborhood, just meters away from the blue sea. Once the hospital opens its door to the public, it will serve as an important tool to limit the increasing number of child deaths in the country. According to the latest Unicef report, The Under-Five and Maternal Mortality rates in Somalia are amongst the highest in the world; one out of every seven Somali child dies before seeing their fifth birthday; 137 deaths out of 1,000 live births.
One out of every 12 women die due to pregnancy related complications. What that means in real number is that out of 100,000 live births, 137 mothers die. The figures are down in relative to the early 90’s.
The hospital will have the capacity to admit 100 in-patients at a go besides pediatric and maternity wings. The Turkish Ngo—Yerdimeli—believes the facility will address deaths due to poor health service in the country.
