MMD CHOLERA response program In Hakkawa, Fuulaay and Dudumaay residential areas, Walaweyn district, Lower Shabelle, Somalia.
As the severe draught hits majority of East African regions, Somalia is among the most affected countries in the region. The efforts for supporting the draught affected families is undergoing in and out of the country where Somali Diaspora, International organizations and Somali government are playing the greater roles.
The general health situation is LOWER SHABELE has been deteriorating for the last two months due to draughts and epidemic diseases.
MMD, in collaboration with Somali Diaspora in the US, have responded jointly by giving medicine and drugs in the clinic centers at Walaweyn district, though it is not enough compared to the needs in the area.
Cholera response program implemented by MMD in collaboration with US-Somali Diaspora targeted walaweyn district, especially, FULAY, DUDUMAAY, and HAKAW residential areas by distributing 100 bags containing 500 units of ORS, chlorine, Soap and detergents. Prior to our distribution, many patients of cholera lost their lives and others were suffering due to lack of medicine.
In addition to, Lower Shabelle is hosting thousands of draught affected families with numerous difficulties. With the reference of late UN report on the draught, the widespread humanitarian crisis has gotten worse and need urgent humanitarian response, according to WFB and UNICEF recent report
The most severe problems that these families have are lack of food, Drinking water, Latrines and shelter. After they arrived, IDPs started to build shattered houses which cannot protect them from the harm conditions of weather.
Local communities have appreciated the program and requested other humanitarian agencies to offer their assistance as the grieve situation worsens.
